Sometimes we can’t see God’s hand in the storm, while we’re still in it. But when we look back, we realize He was never absent—He was carrying us through it all.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…” — Romans 8:28
There’s a strange clarity that can only come after a storm’s passed. While we’re still in the middle of it, life often feels confusing, heavy, and uncertain. We pray for answers while still standing in the questions. We ask God to show us what He’s doing, while everything around us seems unclear in the middle of the storm. In those moments, it can feel like we’re walking through something we’ll never fully understand. But something changes when the season begins to shift. Not all at once. And not always dramatically. Usually, it’s slow, almost quiet, and we begin to realize we’re still standing. That realization alone carries its own kind of testimony.
Have you ever looked back on a season that you thought would break you, only to realize you’re no longer in it? The situation might not have changed in the way you expected. But instead, something within you changed. Strength was formed in places you didn’t notice at the time. Peace was carried through moments that once felt overwhelming. And somehow, even in the midst of uncertainty, you were sustained. It’s only in hindsight that we begin to see what faith was doing all along.
Scripture often reminds us that God’s presence isn’t always immediately visible in the moment, but it’s always faithful in the outcome. “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God…” (Romans 8:28, KJV). That verse doesn’t promise that all things feel good while they’re happening. It promises that God is weaving all things together into something meaningful, even when individual pieces don’t make sense on their own.
That truth becomes clearer with time.
When you look back over your life, you’ll begin to see moments you once questioned in a different light. The delay that frustrated you may have protected you. The closed door you mourned may have redirected you. The season of silence you struggled through may have deepened your dependence on God in ways comfort never could. And suddenly, what once felt like confusion begins to look like care.
Have you ever considered that one of the greatest pieces of evidence for God’s faithfulness isn’t what He removes from our lives, but what He carries us through?
There’re things we would never have chosen for ourselves. Seasons we would have avoided if given the choice. Paths we would’ve changed if we could see the outcome ahead of time. And yet, as we look back, we begin to recognize that even in those places, God wasn’t absent. He was present in ways we couldn’t see at the time.
He was steady when everything else felt uncertain.
He was patient when we were overwhelmed.
He was faithful when our strength felt small.
That’s why retrospect is such a powerful teacher. It allows us to see what fear once obscured. It reveals the fingerprints of God in places we once thought were empty. And it reminds us that our understanding is always partial in the moment, but God’s presence is complete in every season.
There’s also something deeply healing about realizing that you’re still here. Still standing, still believing, and still moving forward, even if slowly. Because there were moments when you didn’t think you would make it to this point. Moments when the weight felt too heavy, the answers too far away, and the road too uncertain. But here you are. And that alone is evidence of grace. Not the absence of struggle. But the presence of sustaining strength within it.
As you look back, you’ll begin to see that God wasn’t only working in the big, dramatic moments of your life, but also in the small, unnoticed ones. The quiet strength to get through another day. The unexpected encouragement that arrived just when you needed it. The peace that held you together when nothing else could. None of those moments were random. They were reminders that you were never walking alone.
That’s why remembering matters. Memory builds gratitude and gratitude strengthens faith. When we remember what God’s already done, it becomes easier to trust Him with what we’re still waiting for. Perhaps that’s where the invitation rests today…. Not to deny what was difficult and not to pretend the storm was easy either.
Our memories help to recognize that even there, God was faithful. And if He was faithful then, He’s faithful now. My prayer is that when we look back on our lives, we don’t only see the storms we’ve survived, but also the quiet hand of God that carried us through every one of them. Because the light after the storm isn’t just the relief of survival.
It’s the revelation that you were never alone in the storm to begin with.

Take a Moment to Reflect
Before you move on today, pause and gently reflect:
What past season once felt overwhelming, but now reveals God’s faithfulness in hindsight?
Where did I assume God was absent, only to later realize He was sustaining me all along?
How has He carried me in ways I did not recognize at the time?
Sometimes the clearest evidence of God’s presence is not what we saw in the moment—but what we understand when we look back.
I hope readers will feel comfortable sending their questions. I may not always be able to respond the very next day, but I’m committed to setting aside time regularly to work through as many questions as I can: richard@threads-of-grace.blog.
